Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by replacing Portland cement with carbonation-activated slag

2018-2021

Funding from nature and technologies research fund of the Government of Quebec (Prof. Shao, McGill University, Canada)

This research project aims at reducing the environmental footprint of the cement and concrete product manufacturing through a circular economy strategy involving the steel industry. The mitigation option relies on the innovative use of steel slag as a cementing material which upon carbonation activation and the use of wood chips filler can produce cement-free and carbon-negative construction blocks. The modeling of the entire supply chain in NATEM allows to study the optimal market conditions for these innovative construction products and to what extent they can contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gases in Quebec.
